ATEX is the name given to the European Directive to ensure that all EU member states create appropriate legislation so that the health and safety protection of employees from an explosion caused by work activity is reduced. Although sharing many similarities, ATEX compliance in Great Britain, after Brexit, is transitioning to a new UKCA EX scheme. Compliance will still be implemented in the UK through the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).

ATEX, UKCA EX and DSEAR regulations directly address safety hazards in your working environment. These hazards can include the handling and maintenance of potentially flammable, explosive and thermally reactive dusts, gases, vapours and other materials. If not properly controlled, these hazards could lead to potentially catastrophic fire and explosive risks.

Understanding ATEX & DSEAR regulations

ATEX and DSEAR are risk assessments. As part of these assessments, a hazard must be present – this is usually the presence of a flammable atmosphere and a source of ignition. When undertaking either a DSEAR or ATEX assessment, the following ‘how likely’ questions are usually asked: who could be hurt, how severely, what can be done to prevent it?
