What is a safety management system?

A framework for managing health and safety in organisations consisting of policies and procedures that are implemented within the business to prevent, control and mitigate harm to people or the environment. Typically the policies and procedures cover the various controls present to secure safety and covers safe operating procedures, risk assessment, maintenance and inspection of assets, management of change, safe working practices such as permit to work, emergency management, contractor management, incident and near miss reporting and investigation, audits, performance metrics and management review.

What is a process safety management system?

A framework for managing the hazards and risks of processes within organisations, especially those that can cause significant harm to people and the environment, for example, fire, explosions and toxic releases etc. The frameworks cover the process safety lifecycle model – design, construction, commissioning, operation, inspection, maintenance, decommissioning and demolition of processes. The frameworks are based on accepted best management practices utilising the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology. Similar procedurally to a standard health and safety management system, but with a more robust use of appropriate methodologies required.

What is process safety leadership?

The application of best leadership practices in preventing process safety issues – significant fires, explosions and toxic releases etc. Primarily associated with the organisation being led to ‘do the right thing’ and provide the necessary commitment and resources – and develop an appropriate process safety culture within an organisation.

What is process safety culture?

The outputs from a process safety culture are the behaviours and attitudes of everyone within the business to ‘do the right things’ to prevent process safety incidents – fires, explosions and toxic releases which can cause significant harm to people and the environment, and the business. To achieve the desired outputs require that everyone implements and follows appropriate policies and procedures; that appropriate targets and objectives are set; and that the organisation takes every opportunity to coach and mentor individuals to be aware and understand what can go wrong, and the measures present to manage the hazards and risks of the processes.
