On-Demand Webinar:
Combustible Dust Hazards: Prevention and Protection

A Presentation by our US Experts

10:00am (EST) Tuesday, January 16, 2024

Combustible dust poses a serious threat to the safety of workers and the integrity of property. Industries dealing with the production or handling of fine particles, such as chemical processing, food processing, woodworking, metalworking, pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical storage and handling, paint and coatings, plastic and rubber manufacturing, energy and power generation, textile production, and recycling and waste management, are susceptible to combustible dust hazards.

OSHA Standards and National Emphasis Program: Various mandatory OSHA standards, both industry-wide and industry-specific, address combustible dust hazards. OSHA has implemented the Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program (CPL 03-00-008), emphasizing the need for comprehensive dust hazard management.

This webinar will introduce the participant to the conditions necessary for a combustible dust deflagration, describe the standard laboratory tests that define the hazard level, and review the common risk mitigation equipment and procedures used to minimize the risk of deflagrations. It will also provide an overview of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards referenced in the OSHA National Emphasis Program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, participants will be able to understand:

  • The fundamentals of dust fires and explosions and how they arise in industrial processes
  • Dust Hazard identification and assessment techniques
  • Explosion prevention techniques, including control of hazardous dust accumulations and dust cloud formations, housekeeping, and ignition source management,
  • Explosion protection techniques, including explosion relief venting, explosion suppression and explosion isolation – and how they are used in practice
