Chemistry Lab Manager – Chemical Reaction Hazard Testing (UK)

Salary: Competitive, plus benefits, plus bonus scheme. 

Position: Permanent, Full-time 

Location: Winchester, UK 

As a global and fast expanding business, our company is looking for an experienced Process Safety Chemist to work in our Chemical Reaction Hazards Laboratory. The successful candidate will undertake chemical processing and testing using thermal screen and colorimetry equipment to provide safety and scale-up data on chemical reactions. They will be expected to lead in developing this service for our international client base focusing on solutions for Chemical, Pharmaceutical and other manufacturing industries.  

The successful candidate will already have commercial laboratory experience using Carius, DSC, ARC, ARSST, RC1 and VSP2 equipment for providing scale-up and reaction data. They should be confident in discussing with clients their process issues and identifying their testing need when taking chemical processes through to pilot plant level and full production reactor work. They will be expected to liaise with clients on the end-to-end process of identifying, scoping, reporting, and follow-up of safety projects. Agreeing and delivering within critical client deadlines and be a capable, and effective advocate of process safety. They will be expected to become the primary laboratory contact for chemical reaction analysis and provide expert advice and guidance on process safety. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the projects handled by the CRH lab. 
  • Undertake Chemical Thermal Screening and Chemical Reaction hazard Analysis  
  • Data analysis and Report writing 
  • Support for our fire and explosion physical properties laboratory. 

Key Requirements: 

  • Graduate Chemist with commercial process scale-up experience 
  • Experience with chemical scale-up processes and laboratory testing using Carius, ARC, DSC, ARSST, RC1, VSP2 or equivalent. 
  • Good IT proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. (Word, Excel, Outlook) 
  • Attention to detail 
  • Good communicator

Process Safety Specialist (UK)

Salary: Competitive

As a global business with offices in North America, Europe and Asia our company is looking for an experienced process safety engineer to provide expert process safety advice to blue chip clients on understanding, reducing and/or mitigating the risks of fires and explosions, and toxic releases in the process industry. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake consulting work world-wide, although predominantly in the UK and deliver practical and cost-effective solutions to technical safety challenges. The ideal candidate will grow the Process Safety Management (PSM) side of the business, so the desire to be involved in business development/account management would be particularly advantageous.

Experience in aspects of the process safety management frameworks concerning understanding hazards and risks (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, QRA, DSEAR, etc.) is essential and managing risks (Procedures and policies, management of change, permit to work, asset integrity management, functional safety, auditing etc) would be desirable.

The successful candidate will proactively work with clients on the end-to-end process of identifying, scoping, reporting, follow-up, and auditing of safety projects. Establishing and meeting critical client deadlines and be a capable, and effective communicator and advocate of process safety. With 5+ years’ experience of industrial process safety, the applicant should have a good understanding of regulatory and legislation compliance for safety in the process industries and be aware of changes and updates emanating from national government and the EU. They will be expected to become the primary process safety contact for their clients and partner with them to provide expert advice and guidance on process safety.

Senior Process Safety Engineer (USA)

Location: North Andover, Massachusetts

We are actively hiring for a senior process safety engineer to join our U.S. team. The ideal candidate will have a degree in chemical engineering or related field and 5-10 years’ experience in manufacturing or process safety, with an ability to identify and understand process hazards and risks.

Our team of highly qualified engineers and technical consultants help companies protect their people, workplace, environment, and business. We provide various process safety testing services, skilled technical consulting, and process safety training.

Our U.S. location is looking for a process safety engineer or scientist to provide expert level consulting advice. The successful candidate will undertake consulting work primarily in the USA (although world-wide consulting opportunities may occur) and deliver practical and cost-effective solutions to technical safety challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead process hazard analyses, including risk assessments, DHA, HAZOP, LOPA, QRA, etc.
  • Understand and apply process safety management concepts
  • Understand, interpret, and explain combustible dust test data
  • Understand, interpret, and explain chemical reactivity test results
  • Develop programs (policies and procedures, management of change, permit to work, asset integrity management, functional safety, auditing, etc.)
  • Train on dust safety, chemical reactivity, and process safety
  • Other job duties as the role evolves

 

For consulting purposes, the successful candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, or industrial chemistry
  • Necessary relevant expertise in chemical and/or dust manufacturing
  • Project management skills to communicate with clients to define, carry-out, report, follow up, and audit safety projects
  • Skills to establish and meet critical client deadlines
  • Capable and effective communication and advocation for process safety
  • Good understanding of regulatory, codes, standards, and RAGAGEP for process safety compliance
  • Experience in business development/account management

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, or industrial chemistry
  • Authorized to live and work in the USA
  • Consent to background check
  • Ability to travel domestically, with some international potential
  • Ability to commute to North Andover, MA office location, however, the option of a remote or hybrid role can be discussed

 

Previous Experience:

The ideal candidate would have previous experience in the following areas; however, this would not limit the consideration of any applicant:

  • Held customer facing roles with responsibilities for both commercial and operational business aspects
  • Have experience in a leadership role running a team of similar professional engineer colleagues
  • Proven track record of delivering work on time and to a high standard that exceeds clients’ expectations
